On Friday, Russia claimed to have captured a Georgian spy
of Russian citizenship, whose main goal was to destabilize the region in Southern Russia. This represents the proof that the
Georgian secret services are involved in “disruptive terrorist activities” in North Caucasus, as Federal Security Service (FSB)
informed.
It is also considered that the
Georgian spy, identified as Ramzan Turkoshvili, 34, received rewards in
American dollars from the Georgian secret services in order to establish a
liaison between Georgian intelligence and “active members of illegal armed
groups on Russian territory”. As the FSB further sustained, the scope of this
action was to “organize armed resistance” and to guarantee the rebels free
movement.
The Georgian ministry denied any
accusations brought against it regarding these issues, by considering them as a
“policy of provocation” aimed against Georgia. It mostly believes this
situation to be an obstacle in Georgia’s way to achieve membership of the NATO
military alliance, as it was promised to Georgia after a NATO summit held in
Bucharest a month ago. Moreover, Georgia pursues to retake control on two
separatist Georgian regions that receive Russian support: Abkhazia and South
Ossetia.
