The Minnesota Department of Agriculture issued a consumer advisory on Friday for some refrigerated potato products made by Northern Star Co. After some serious testing, they found the Listeria bacteria in a sample of Simply Potatoes Southwest Style Hash Browns, even if no one has reported an illness related to those products yet. However, Northern Star has issued a voluntary recall. The products included in the recall include hash browns, wedges and slices under the brand names Simply Potatoes, Diners Choice and Farm Fresh with “use by” dates of March 29, this year to April 3, this year. In order to be safe to eat, the recalled products are supposed to be properly cooked. Unfortunately, most of the time, consumers undercook them or heat them in a microwave oven, which may not kill the bacteria. Health officials say that the consumption of food contaminated with Listeria can cause fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea. Healthy people rarely contract Listeriosis, but this can cause fatal infections in high-risk groups such as infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Furthermore, Listeria can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Giant Food LLC and Stop & Shop Supermarket have also pulled the potato products from their shelves due to the possible bacterial contamination. The companies said customers who have purchased these products should discard any unused portions and bring the receipts to their stores for a full refund. Giant Food operates 182 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
