Ohio Woman, 90, Shot Herself after Kicked Out of Her House

Addie Polk, 90, has been living in her house in Ohio for 38 years when she tried to kill herself because she had been evicted. She shot herself and found lying on the floor inside her house when the police came on Wednesday to serve an eviction note. Akron police spokesman Lt. Rick Edwards said on Friday that Polk shot herself in her shoulder, but she only wounded herself.

Now, the 90-year-old woman is under special surveillance at a hospital, where she is also treated for her shoulder wound. This had been the newest attempt made by sheriff’s deputies to evict Polk from her home. She is living in a single-family home as she couldn’t pay her mortgage.

Edwards also added that "it appears they're evicting her over her mortgage. She's lived in the house, the neighbors said, something like 38 years and in the last couple of years fell prey to some predatory lending company or financial institution."

News reports have said that the police had tried to evict Polk nearly thirty times before she made the attempt to kill herself. This is something nearly usual this time in the United States, because many people with adjustable interest rates can’t afford the monthly payments. Many of them chose to kill themselves inside the houses they can’t afford and this has been the highest reason for which the U.S. financial crisis has started.

honestly, i bet this woman had a 45 year mortgage, she was well on her way to paying it after 38 years. the company and township couldnt understand her plight, shes a ninety year old woman where is she going to go. if money and greed werent the factor here, this woman would still be alive left to keep her house for the remainder of her life, which may not be too long considering her age. at this point society should feel sympathy for those who are aged past their working age.

What's wrong with our society that we would throw a fragile elderly women out on the streets???

This makes my heart ache! No she didn't pay her mortgage but why don't they have programs to help her? There should be a multistep process of help before evicting these people.
