Olympic Torch's Relay: Chaos or a Game?
Olympic Torch's Relay: Chaos or a Game?
This year’s Olympic torch world tour seems to find chaos anywhere it goes, as activists gather to protest against the Chinese crackdown in Tibet. It was now time for San Francisco, the torch’s only stop on the North American continent, to feel the smell of the fight for human rights, after delirious marches in London and Paris.

It was the first time in the games’ history that the Olympic flame was damped down for security reasons and the first time that its relay was not exactly a march through cities as we know it.

After San Francisco’s authorities prepared for the arrival of the Olympic torch, it was all dust, since they decided to drastically cut and change the route, leaving hundreds of protesters, torch supporters and even policemen without knowing what was happening and why was the torch playing hide- and- seek with them.

The move to alter the official route of the torch infuriated all those that wanted to see the torch, any reason they had. While protesters came in San Francisco days ago and were waiting for the torch in order to spread their support for Tibet and all other downtrodden countries all over the world, others were there just to take a glimpse at the Olympic Games’ symbol.

The decision to change the route was made by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Police Chief Heather Fong due to the fact that the police force gathered neat the relay's original start and finish were overwhelmed by the crowd.

Newsom said the decision was made for people’s safety. Indeed, this seemed to be the safest stop of the Olympic torch, after London and Paris were many people were arrested and it was all a chaos. But, even if only three people were arrested in California, it looked like a cheesy game, with policemen running everywhere and protesters being more infuriated than ever.

It is hard to realize which the best variant is, but a single fact is certain, the Beijing Olympic Games are the most controversial ever known.

The torch’s next stop will be Buenos Aires.
