Polish soldiers posted photos of dead Iraqis and Afghans on the internet, and the military now plans to ban private picture-taking on missions abroad, media reports said Wednesday.

The photos showed dead soldiers and civilians, torn limbs and bloodied body parts, the Polska daily reported.

Polish prosecutors are investigating whether the soldiers could be charged with crimes, the report said.

Editors of the Polish website that showed the pictures told the newspaper they published the images to show the realities of war and the conditions Polish soldiers face.

A spokesman for the army's operations command said the photos could lead to reprisals against Polish troops.

'Somebody can use the photos taken by the soldiers for enemy propaganda,' Dariusz Kacperczyk told Polska. 'And even as a pretext for revenge.'

The planned ban would affect all Polish contingents abroad and would also restrict soldiers from giving out information about their missions, the paper said.
