“Prom Night”: No.1 at Box Office

The teen slasher movie “Prom Night” starring Brittany Snow, was the top film at the weekend box office in North America, as it managed to earn almost $23 million during its first three days, Bloomberg reports. Sony Pictures attracted teenagers to the movie, as “Prom Night” is a PG-13 remake of a 1980 horror film starring Jamie Lee Curtis, in which teens are killed by a professor-turned-stalker during the high-school prom.

None of this year’s horror films, including “One missed call,” “Shutter,” “The Eye,” and “The Ruins” topped $13 million in its first weekend.

“Prom Night” topped Keanu Reeves’ cop thriller “Street Kings,” this weekend’s No.2 with a solid $12 million. Sony’s blackjack drama “21” fell to No.3, with $11 million, after two weeks ant No.1. In its three-week total stands at $62.3 million.

The family adventure “Nim’s Island,” starring Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin dropped to No.4 with $9 million and George Clooney’s football drama “Leatherheads” went down to No.5, with $6.2 million.

“Horton Hears A Who” is still an attraction for the children, earning this weekend $6 million, which placed it at No.6. ”Miramax Films’ romantic comedy “Smart People,” starring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica parker and Ellen Page, opened at No.7 with a modest $4.2 million.

Viacom’s Paramount Pictures’ “The Ruins” fell three places from No.5 last weekend, with $3, 2 million

Three major movies are due to open Friday: Sony’s “88 Minutes,” a thriller starring Al Pacino, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” a comedy from Universal Pictures and Lions Gate Films’ “The Forbidden Kingdom,” an action movie starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
