The future is not so bright for rapper Remy Ma, as she was
convicted on Thursday for having shot in the abdomen an acquaintance the last
year. The dispute was stemmed by the rapper’s belief that the victim had stolen
her some money.
Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, was convicted of
assault, weapons possession and coercion on Makeda Barnes-Joseph. The artist
was taken into custody after the conviction and faces up to 25 years in prison.
The incident took place in the small hours of July 14, 2007,
after Smith and Barnes-Joseph spent the night out in New York. Barnes-Joseph was suspected that
she took $3,000 from her purse. Angry and determined to take her money back,
Remy Ma got into the victim’s car, carrying a gun. A fight broke out between
the two and during it Barnes-Joseph got shot into the abdomen.
Even though the artist claimed that the gun accidentally
shot her, prosecutors thought otherwise. “She took every step you had to take
to shoot somebody,” assistant District Attorney Michael McIntosh said. The bullet perforated the victim’s colon and
hit her rectum and she had to undergo three surgeries during the three weeks she
was hospitalized.
The 26-year old artist is jailed without bail. She will be
sentenced on April 23.
The defense attorney, Ivan Fisher said that his client
didn’t see that coming and is taken aback; he also announced that he planed to
appeal.
Rapper Remy Ma was shortlisted for a 2004 Grammy for her
part in Terror Squad’s hit “Lean Back.”
