Mobile phones could be even more threatening for human
health than smoking. At least this was the theory that an Australian
neurosurgeon tried to demonstrate.
Vini Khurana, a top Australian neurosurgeon, said that using
mobile for more than 10 years could double the risk of brain cancer. This was
the result of a 15-month analysis on the link between mobile phones and
malignant brain tumors.
When exposed to the invisible electromagnetic radiation
emitted by the mobile phones, people’s bodies are more likely to develop malignant
brain tumours.
Dr. Khurana emphasized the need for a “solid scientific
study” that could demonstrate the observations he made during a period of at
least 10-15 years.
“It is anticipated
that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and
smoking, and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation,
including very young children,” Dr Khurana said in a research paper published on
the website brain-surgery.us.
He said the radiation could interact with the human brain
and the Bluetooth devices could convert the brain into a “potentially
self-harming antenna.” Children under three years are more exposed to this
risk. The report said when a child’s brain is compared to an adult’s brain one
may see that the first one has a greater relative water content and a lower
volume than the second one. The researchers said that mobile phone radiations
affect the child’s brain cells and after a period of time this may lead to
brain cancer.
They added that children should not use mobile phones unless
in an emergency.
The study is a long term one because the incubation period
for a malignant tumour caused by mobile phone radiation may take 10 or even 20
years.
