Researchers Ask People to Stop Using Chimps as Marketing Tools

Chimps are nice and always comic! They jump, play and sometimes even “speak.” No matter how sad you might be, seeing a chimpanzee dressed like a human being or just wearing a funny hat will always make you laugh.

Chimpanzees are man’s closest relatives and it is probably because of this fact that they have always been used in all kinds of commercials, movies and not only. Chimps became marketing tools just like that. Unfortunately, with time, chimps have also become an endangered species.

So, although they are endangered animals, people are still using these funny primates as living marketing tools. But primate researchers noticed recently that this had to get to an end and asked marketing specialists to stop using these primates as advertising tools.

According to Lincoln Park Zoo primatologist Stephen Ross, it seems that by using them in marketing schemes advertisers are also offering the incorrect perception that chimps are not an endangered species in fact. "What is perceived to be harmless fun really has serious consequences. The most common reason why people thought that chimps were not in the endangered species category is because they were seen on television, advertisements and movies and must therefore not be in jeopardy," Lincoln Park Zoo primatologist Stephen Ross said.

Furthermore, a life as TV or advertising stars is not what chimpanzees need. Although they seem to amuse themselves by doing all kinds of tricks, chimps suffer in fact, as they have been taken from their families and forced to adapt to a very unnatural environment.
