Mardy Fish, the American tennis player that stunned first ranked Federer last week, was eliminated on Thursday, in the first round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
After managing to defeat No. 1 Federer, Fish has played in the finals in Indian Wells, but was defeated by Novak Djokovic, the winner of the Australian Open.
At this Masters Series event, after winning over ten top players, Fish’s recent great run came to an abrupt end, as he failed to make it out of the first round, losing in front of Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-3. 6-3.
Another surprise was Bobby Reynolds, who has beaten 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) the former No. 1 Marat Safin, who has won only one match in six tries this year. Despite the fact that Reynolds could not convert a match point on Safin’s serve, the American rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the tie-break by winning four straight points, which brought the Russian his fifth loss in six matches this season.
Jose Acasuso won a second-round meeting with Lleyton Hewitt due to his victory over Santiago Ventura 6-2, 6-4, while Mario Ancic survived against Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3.
The other winners in the first round were Dudi Sela, Simone Bolelli, Jurgen Melzer, Julien Benneteau, Ivo Minar, Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki and Ernests Gulbis.
Troicki will play sixth-seeded Andy Roddick in the second round.
