Samsung Ads Netflix To Its Latest Blu-ray Players
Samsung announced on Tuesday its new partnership with two Internet multimedia companies, in order to incorporate audio/video streaming services into the company’s latest Blu-ray disc players. The agreements were signed with the online video disc rental company Netflix and the music recommendation and Internet radio service Pandora. Both of them will bring Internet-based multimedia streaming capabilities to Samsung’s BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray disc players. As for the price, Pandora is a free service and Netflix is pretty cheap; both players carry a list of price of $400, so they’re accessible to anyone.

Users of the products can now apply a firmware update that will enable near-instant streaming of over 12,000 Netflix movies. The Samsung BD-P2550’s new firmware update also adds access to the popular Pandora Internet radio service as well as support for BD-Live features on supporting Blu-ray movie titles. Another update is due to be released on October the 30th, one which will update both players’ support of the DTS-HD High Resolution Audio format. The Samsung players now join the LG BD300 Blu-ray player, the Roku Netflix Player and the Xbox 360 (once the firmware update goes live in November). These are the only devices that can access Netflix’s online viewing service, except the PC’s.

The original set for the Samsung players included an HQV video processing, 7.1 – channel analog audio outputs and 1GB of on-board flash memory (no need for adding an SD card or USB flash drive to deliver compatibility with online BD-Live features). With the Netflix viewing experience, the Samsung players offer unlimited viewing of the growing (12,000 – plus) library of on-demand movies and TV shows to any Netflix subscriber on the $9/month plan or above.
