Rapper Clifford Harris, known as T.I. pleaded guilty to
three charges of illegal weapons possession at a hearing in Atlanta on Thursday. The 27-year-old star was
arrested in October last year by agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives who found three machine guns and two silencers in the
rapper’s possession.
T.I. initially pleaded not guilty and faced up to 10 years
in prison. However, under the terms of his current plea agreement he will have
to spend 1,000 hours working in community service. The sentencing will take
place in March 2009 and if the rapper will complete his hours of community
service, he will receive a sentence of only one year in prison, a $100,000
fine, three years under supervised release and another 1,500 hours of community
service.
Mr. Harris’ lawyer, David Nahmias said that if T.I. will not
complete his 1,000 hours of community service, he will face a longer sentence.
But, apparently, the star is ready to go back on the right track. In the
Atlanta Journal and Constitution the rapper said: "I'm not looking forward
to being incarcerated. I have a long road of redemption to travel. ... I realize
completely I violated the law, and I take it very seriously."
As for the community service, Harris will have to spend the
1,000 hours with young people educating them about how dangerous violence,
guns, gangs and drugs are. Nahmias said that maybe T.I. will help "prevent
and deter at least some of them from committing crimes that endanger their communities
and ruin their lives."
T.I. is mostly famous for his guest appearance in Justin
Timberlake’s single “My Love.” Moreover, he starred in the 2006 movie “ATL” and
won two Grammys for his appearance in 2007 Ridley Scott’s “American Movie”
featuring Denzel Washington.
