“The Baby Borrowers” Show Teaches Teenage Couples to Take Care of Children

NBC’s show “The Baby Borrowers” features five couples aged between 16 and 19; they have to take care for someone else’s child over the course of three weeks. Although those who vote for the show say that the reality show may have an influence on the rate of teen pregnancies because this type of programming may be a lesson for teenagers which should make them realize that it isn’t so easy to care for a child, there are other voices saying that this type of reality show separates babies and toddlers from their families and places them with inexperienced teenagers.

“A child security should not be gambled with,” said Robert Hendren, the president of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Instead of being a positive social experiment, it is a reality show with potential harmful consequences that puts at risk young children and exploits their vulnerabilities for ratings.

The Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry released a statement saying that the show could cause the babies distress and anxiety.

Representatives for NBC said that the babies are well-cared for and they must undergo psychological examination before the show to make sure they do not suffer from intense separation anxiety.

“The producers of ‘The Baby Borrowers’ took all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and welfare of the children participating in the series,” NBC said in a statement. “The environment was carefully controlled, and the children were properly care for at all times.”

However, the controversial experiment based on the concept of borrowing babies for entertainment has already stirred up an unusual amount of interest among the viewers and the press.
