The Chemicals in Baby Bottles Can Harm Kids

The chemical used to make plastic for baby bottles and soda cans can really harm the fetuses and the baby children. The chemical needs to be studied better before it is concluded to be safe, as the U.S. government report said. The BPA, as the chemical’s scientific name is, had harmful effects on animals, the National Toxicology Program said today in a report.

The report tried to arrest the parents’ attention about their family’s exposure to the substance. The staff of the FDA said last month that the agency “had concluded that an adequate margin of safety exists'' for the BPA when it’s used in products which come in contact with food.

John Bucher, associate director of the toxicology group, said that “the possibility that BPA may affect human development cannot be dismissed.” He added that the BPA exposure levels in animals are the same with the ones in humans, so the risk would be even greater.

The Food and Drug Administration advised the producers of the bottles made of BPA to do more detailed tests, specifically in adult, pregnant and newborn monkeys and to look for its effect in the development and behavior of the people.

Still, the American Chemistry Council, which represents the chemical industry, said that “there is no direct evidence that exposure to bisphenol A adversely affects human reproduction or development.”
