The Psychedelic Fish Was Named a Species

A scientific journal has announced that the psychedelic fish living in the oceans from Indonesia has been recently classified as a new species. This fish’s characteristic is the one connected to the fact that it bounces under the ocean like a rubber ball.

This kind of frogfish was discovered by the scuba diving instructors who were working for a tour operator a year ago. They found the interesting now-called species in the deep waters off Ambon Island in eastern Indonesia. Scientists later explained that this fish having the colors and appearance of a frog was a spin of tan and peach zebra stripes which extended from its aqua eyes to its tail.

The operator leading the scuba diving team called Ted Pietsch, lead author of a paper published in this month's edition of Copeia, the journal of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. Pietsch then made some research on the fish’s DNA and discovered that they really are a new species of fish.

The professor at the University of Washington called it "psychedelica," which is a member of the antennariid genus, Histiophryne. This fish looking like a frog has flippers on both sides of its body, which have developed to be like legs. Pietsch wrote in the study about this frogfish that it has many behavioral traits never discovered in fishes alike.

The study on the psychedelic fish showed that they strike the seabed and push off with their flippers as to expel the water from tiny gill which is opening to throw them forward. Thus they bounce around in a strange way with the help of their centered tail.

Mark Erdman, a senior adviser to the Conservation International's marine program, stated that this discovery is very interesting because most of the people believed they knew all about the frogfishes. He added that the extraordinary diversity of the Indonesian region showed that there are still many things to be discovered.
