Twenty-five outfits worn by James Gandolfini, best known for his portrayal of the HBO series “The Sopranos,” have been sold at auction on Wednesday.
The collection displayed at the event includes not only the actor’s personal costumes, but also outfits belonging to other lead characters in the well-known TV series. For instance, Domanic Chianese (Junior Soprano), Tony Sirico (Paulie Walnuts) and Robert Iler (A.J. Soprano) agreed that the clothing they have worn on the film set to be out on a bid. The 62 Soprano costumes brought $227,931.
The purpose of the auction was to raise the highest possible amount of money for a charity that aids wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The highest bid was on a bloodstained suit of clothes including the shirt, tank top and the pants the actor wore on a scene during “Members Only,” when Uncle Junior shot the mob boss.
Another costume which caught the attention of the public contained a blue, red and yellow striped robe and boxer shorts. Having been worn by Tony in various episodes, it fetched $21,250. Moreover, a tan cotton bathrobe with lavender trim and 'S' insignia on the breast pocket brought $13,750.
Impressed by Christie’s auction, the WWP's founder and executive director John Melia said: "Wounded Warrior Project is profoundly grateful to James Gandolfini and Christie's for their support of our mission to honor and empower wounded soldiers. The donation made from the sale of Mr. Gandolfini's wardrobe as Tony Soprano will directly benefit those that have been wounded.”
