Windsor was hit by a large tornado which killed at least one person, destroyed
dozens of homes and caused a number of clashes and multiple injuries on
highways in Weld County. The victim of the tornado was a
resident at a campground outside Greeley, representatives of Weld County
said in a statement. He was identified as Oscar Michael Manchester, 52, Chris
Robillard, deputy coroner for Weld
County, said.
Weld County Sheriff's Cmdr. Ken Poncelow
said “dozens of houses and dozens of cars” were badly damaged and that several
semis were rolled off U.S. 85 north of Gilcrest, according to the Denver Post. The
National Weather Service said the tornado touched down just before noon near
Platteville, about 50 miles north of Denver.
In Windsor,
a farming town of 16,000 that was hardest hit and numerous residents tried to
save what they could from their homes, the Associated Press noted. At least 14
residents suffered minor injuries, officials said.
Nine people were taken to the Medical Center
of the Rockies in Loveland
with various injuries.
Windsor, a community 15 miles northwest of Greeley was the hardest
hit by the strong storm. Fire crews will continue the work to restore power and
utilities, as well as to clean the roads and provide perimeter security.
“You've heard of tornadoes that hit the
ground and then go back into the clouds,” Greeley
police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said, quoted by the Denver Post. “This one, it just
sat on the ground, and it kept going and going.”
