Vonk on verge of signing for Ajax Amsterdam
Dutch media reported Monday that former South African goalkeeper Hans Vonk is to come out of retirement to sign for Ajax Amsterdam.

Vonk, 38, who previously joined Ajax as a 34-year-old and then played 31 games for the first team, even though he was signed as third choice, last played for Ajax Cape Town in South Africa last season.

Dutch media said that South African-born Vonk, who played 43 games for Bafana and represented the country at the 1998 World Cup, has received an urgent call from his former club after first-choice Maarten Stekelenburg and his reserve Dennis Gentenaar both picked up injuries that will keep them out of action for several weeks.

Third-choice Ajax keeper Kenneth Vermeer, played his first league game for Ajax on the weekend as they lost 5-2 against Heerenveen, with inexperienced 18-year-old Sergio Padt on the bench.

Vonk, who still lives in South Africa, is expected to fly to Amsterdam on Monday evening, to sign a short-term contract with the former Champions League winners, the reports said.
