Cheryl Rowe is the driver that took the wrong way. Her mistake
killed herself and also an 8-month pregnant woman south of Roseburg on Interstate-5. Rowe from Albany was driving a 2002
white Pontiac Grand Am. She was going northbound in the southbound lanes when
she hit the car which had Chanthea Prak of Fresno the 20-year-old pregnant as a
passenger, a 2008 Hyundai Elantra.
The accident occurred at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Oregon
State Police said that two people were pronounced dead at the scene and another
one, the driver of the Hyundai, was seriously injured. The 21-year-old Andrew
Cajita of San Mateo, California,
was transported to Mercy Medical Center,
then Life-flighted to Legacy Emanuel Hospital
in Portland. He
was listed in critical condition Sunday afternoon. Prak was a member of the
U.S. Army stationed in Fort Lewis,
Washington.
Witnesses reported seeing Rowe’s car driving o the wrong way
near milepost 113. Cajita’s car tried to avoid the oncoming car by swerving to
the left, but police said the right front passenger side was struck by the
wrong way car. As a result, the southbound lanes of I-5 were closed for 4 hours
and a detour was established by the Oregon Department of Transportation.
